JAFPE goes to the West and tours Arata Endo’s monumental architecture

Ashiyahama high-rise residence was designed by a joint-venture called ASTM, who won the national design proposal competition for industrialized construction in Ashiya, Hyogo, in 1973. “Mega structure” construction system is the feature: apartments in four stories are supported on mega-frames; no beams and columns sticking out inside a compartment. Each mega-beam story houses communal space where residents can normally walk and relax or evacuate in case of fire. JAFPE members based in Osaka and Tokyo gathered to attend the technical visit guided by personnel at Ashiya Fire Department focusing on such fire safety items as refuge floors, drenchers instead of fire doors, steel mega-columns without fire protection, etc.
